Student shot at, seriously injured
A teenaged student was seriously injured when three unidentified miscreants opened fire from what is suspected to be a .22 pistol at crowded Mhalsakant Chowk, Akurdi on Mumbai-Pune highway Sunday evening.
The injured, Sanjay Marasnale (19) from Panchtaranagar area of Akurdi, has been admitted to Sassoon General Hospital. He is in a serious condition, hospital authorities said.
Sanjay, who is the doing a vocational course at ITI, Aundh, was strolling along with his friends Riyaz Chandsahab Pinjari (19) from Ganganagar area of Nigdi and Sayaji Nivrutti Bhosale (19) from Gurudeonagar in Akurdi around 8.15 p.m. when the incident took place.
The reasons for which the culprits opened fire could not be ascertained till late in the evening. Despite being questioned persistently by the sleuths, Sanjay has maintained that he did not have enmity with anybody.
The Marasnale family, which hails from Solapur district, had migrated to Pune about two decades ago. Sanjay’s father Ramchandra works as a watchman with an Akurdi-based company while his mother is a maid servant. He has two elder brothers and a younger sister.
Hundreds of passers-by watched in shock as the miscreants who were riding on a scooter opened fire on Sanjay. A mini-stampede ensued when Sanjay collapsed in a pool of blood after a bullet penetrated his right shoulder. The culprits sped away taking advantage of the chaos that ensued, police said.
Meanwhile, the Nigdi police have launched a massive hunt to track down the culprits after filing a case of attempted murder. The crime branch has also began a parallel probe into the incident.
