On record!
The tallest, longest, largest… this is definitely a gathering of superlatives. Subhash Tarun Mandal, a city-based organisation, is to felicitate Limca Book record-holders on June 7 at 6 pm. Those to be felicitated include Shridhar Chillal, the proud owner of the longest nails in the country, the tallest couple – the Kulkarnis, Praveen Nayak who with his team, Ashok Gajmal and Sushil Manjare, built the largest sky lantern.
Recognising individual effort, the others who will be awarded are Ajay Pangati, for his all-India solo motor cycle expedition, Milind Deshmukh for balancing a milk bottle on his head for 113 kms, Deepali Bhayya, who skated all the way from Sholapur to Pune, and Maria Bangkokwala, for her limbo roller below a Maruti car.
The venue for the presentation ceremony is Sagar Plaza which, incidentally, is also in the lineup for the largest cake. The president of the function will be Balasaheb Bharde, while chief guests will be Pratibhatai Shahu Modak, Venkateshwar Rao and Aneesh Sowjiani.
In communion
While the natural environs at the Empress Botanical Gardens are enough to lend that feeling of sublime peace, we now have the Osho Commune International trying to enhance the mood further by holding an introductory meditation camp for Puneites here on June 7.
Organised by the Osho Arihant Meditation Centre, the camp will begin in the morning at 6.30 am with dynamic meditation and conclude with dinner at 9.30 pm. According to the Commune, participants will be introduced to various meditation methods like Natraj, Nadabrahma and Kundalini. There will also be a special Laughter Meditation at 11.30 a.m. to be followed by a question-answer session about the meditations. While the camp will be led by Osho disciple Swami Satya Niranjan, Yashwant Dev, a veteran music director of Maharashtra, will render devotional songs in the evening.
Participants will be expected to attend the entire session, for which they have to pay Rs 150 which includes tea, breakfast, lunch and dinner. While the usual prerequisite of an AIDS negative certificate has been waived, participants are requested to bring along maroon or white robes if possible. Alternately, they will be available at the venue on hire.
So all those interested in this one-day event can contact Osho Arihant Centre on Laxmi Road for more details and spend a Sunday the mystic way.
Turn it on
The first-ever Internet-based Miss Photogenic’ contest for Pune gals is on! On-line, that is. Starting June 3, punecity.com launched its Kodak Face of the Net, restricted only to the Pune girls. The panel of judges will, however, be from all over the world. Pune-based girls between 18 and 24 are invited to produce two photographs (one sans make-up and the other with the pancake on).
“The pictures of 10 finalists will be selected from the applications by Pune experts and put on the website. The panel will cast its votes and the interested surfers will cast their votes simultaneously,” disclose Suchita Kudale of Entre Nous and Dev Nadkarni, who has floated the website, the duo that conceptualised the contest.
And why should any potential beauty queen apply? Well, there are wonderful gifts and prizes to be won. That itself could be a good enough reason. The winner also gets media exposure and possible modelling contracts.
For the good-lookers, entry forms are available at Kodak Fotofast outlets, to be filled before June 12. The winners will be declared at a glittering function in the city around June 30.

They are back! For one last tango at Jaws. Yep, it’s the Thums Up Friday Nite Live at your favourite eating joint, and with the reason that makes Jaws popular – Airwave – with music from Dire Straits and Santana. What one should be watching out for is the fab four on guitars, as they will be playing numbers from two bands that have arguably two of the best guitarists in the world – Mark Knopfler and Carlos Santana – and that is a formidable act to follow. So head out to Jaws this Friday as Sudheer, Derek, Roger, Sanjay and percussionist Darren belt out numbers like Once upon a time in the west, Sultans of swing, Black magic woman and Let me inside. They will, they will, rock you!
