Manchester United needed a late strike from substitute Carlos Tevez to salvage a 1-1 draw at Olympique Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League first knockout round tie on Wednesday.

Argentine striker Tevez fired in from close range three minutes from time after a cross by Nani took a deflection off Lyon striker Fred. France forward Karim Benzema had put Lyon ahead with a low drive from 20 metres in 54th minute.

Messi’s brace

In Glasgow, Lionel Messi scored two goals and Thierry Henry added another on Wednesday to help Barcelona beat Celtic 3-2. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink put Celtic ahead in the 16th minute, but Messi equalized in the 18th.

Barry Robson restored the Scottish champion’s lead in the 39th, but Henry closed the deficit in the 53rd. Messi secured the win in the 79th.

Arsenal held at home

In North London, AC Milan held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw. Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor had the ball in the net in the 53rd, but was called for offside. He also headed a cross from Theo Walcott on to the bar in the final minute of injury time.
