PUNE, April 26: The Poona University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) has opposed the awarding of the title of “Professor Emeritus” to former Vice-Chancellor’s Prof Ram Takwale and Prof Shridhar Gupte in a letter submitted to the Chancellor and Governor of Maharashtra Dr P C Alexander.

Vice-Chancellor of University of Pune Dr Arun Nigavekar took the decision to award the title to both Takwale and Gupte at the Academic Council meeting which concluded last week. The decision is expected to be ratified at tomorrow’s management council meeting.

Prof Harish Desai, President of PUTA, said that they were opposed to awarding the title of Takwale and Gupte as their contribution to the respective subjects was meagre. "We feel the title should be given to a person of eminence in a subject,"Desai said further alleging whether it was under the Academic Council’s purview of awarding the title.

Meanwhile the issue of the appointment of the Registrar is also likely to come up at the meeting with the Acting Registrar Dr Arun Adsool’s term ending on April 28.
