Shiv Sainiks vandalise another pitch

LUCKNOW: In a repeat of the Ferozeshah Kotla incident, some Shiv Sainiks last night dug up the pitch at the Muzzafarnagar stadium, which is to host a one-day international women’s cricket match between India and Pakistan on February two. Principal Home Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Naresh Dayal told newsmen here that three Sainiks had been arrested in this connection. He said adequate security would be provided to both the teams and smooth conduct of the match would be ensured.

Onion export ban partially lifted

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday lifted the ban on potato exports and partially removed curbs on onion exports with immediate effect. The decision was taken by the Cabinet committee on prices after a review of the availability of essential commodities. An official spokesperson said exports of Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram onions were now permitted.

Assembly polls in five states

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission today declaredby-elections to eleven Assembly seats in five states to be held on February 22. Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill said notification for the bye-elections would be issued on January 29. The last date for filing nominations will be February 5.

A-I flight safe

FRANKFURT: A rough landing by an Air India jet resulted in the closure of a runway at Frankfurt airport, forcing the cancellation of dozens of flights today at continental Europe’s biggest hub.

The Air India 747 from New Delhi apparently miscalculated its approach while coming in for a landing in fog last night and hit several lights and an antenna on the runway, airport officials said.

None of the 336 people on board was injured.

Temple set afire

VALSAD: A temple was set afire by some miscreants at Padarkhada village, 25 km from Ahwa town in Dangs district on Wednesday night. Police said the vandals installed a cross in the destroyed Hanuman temple.
