Income Tax offices open on SundayMUMBAI: Offices of the Income Tax and Customs/Excise Departments will remain open till midnight on Sunday (January 31), for filing declarations under the Kar Vivad Samadhan Scheme. On Saturday, January 30, the work of receiving declarations will be going on during office hours. The scheme, which was to end on December 31, 1998, was extended for another month, following a delayed and slow response from assesses. The scheme seeks to settle cases involving taxes to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore which are held up in litigation.Racket bustedMUZAFFARNAGAR: A gang involved in imprinting fake currency notes was busted with the arrest of its three members at Khatauli town today, police said here. Police seized fake currency notes of hundred rupee denomination to the tune of Rs 81,000. Police raided a house in the town and seized fake currency notes following a report that some people were supplying them in the markets.Girls crushedMUMBAI: Two schoolgirls were crushed to death by a speeding tanker at Kurla this morning. According to police, the accident took place at Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg near Swadeshi Mill when they were crossing the road. The two girls, identified as Sunanda Kokne and Chhaya Shinde, both aged ten, came under the wheel and died on the spot.Mulund firingMUMBAI: Two unidentified men opened fire at the owner of Sheetal Dairy at Mulund on Friday night. While Manoj Kaushik Patil (30) was on his way to his residence, two gunmen accosted him at Zaveri Road at Mulund West and opened indiscriminate fire at him. The random firing also injured two bystanders. Even as these injured persons slumped on the ground, the gunmen made good their escape.
