
Desecration of Shivaji statue sparks unrest
NASHIK: Tension prevailed at Ravalgaon in Malegaon city on Saturday night when the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, installed around the main street, was desecrated. According to police sources, some Shiv Sena activists caught one youth, Hiraman Amrut Sonawne (19), who was standing near the statue. They thrashed him before handing him over to the police. Shop owners downed their shutters as tension grew. Two platoons of SRP were deployed in the village to maintain law and order. The situation is reportedly under control now.
Tension in Kanpur
KANPUR: Tension prevailed in the city on Sunday following the recovery of seven carcasses of cows in front of a guest house in Gobind Nagar area here, police said. Police said the cows might have been poisoned.
Tremors at Koyna
PUNE: Mild tremors were once again reported on Sunday from the Koyna region of Maharashtra at 7.03 am, measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale. Themeteorological department said the earthquake had its origin at the epicentre of latitude 17.3 degrees north long and 73.7 degrees east in the Koyna region, about 144 kilometres from here.
Tendu policy probe
BHOPAL: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started an investigation into the alleged loss of Rs 212 crore due to the change in the tendu leaves policy by the then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Madhya Pradesh in 1990, it was officially stated here on Sunday.
Bodies recovered
FEROZEPUR: Altogether 27 bodies have been extricated from the mini bus which plunged into a canal near here on Saturday, killing 40 people. The retrieved bodies include that of three women and two children, official sources said here.
Nepal Opposition
KATHMANDU: Nepal’s main political Opposition, the Nepal Communist Party-United Marxist and Leninist (NCP-UML), has split into two factions ahead of a major parliamentary vote, party sources said here on Sunday.The split comes as Nepal’s leaders prepare to debate a no-trust motion.
