Mishra to head CBI

NEW DELHI: Trinath Mishra, Special Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation, will take charge of the investigation agency on April 1, when its current director D R Kartikayan retires. But Mishra has been appointed as director in-charge. This unusual situation results from the recent Supreme Court order, whereby the CBI director can only be selected by a three-member board under the supervision of the Central Vigilance Board. Mishra is a 1965-batch police officer from the UP Cadre.

Kesri hearing

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today adjourned the hearing on a PIL seeking initiation of legal proceedings against former Congress President Sitaram Kesri for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known source of income and giving and receiving bribes to several Bihar MLAs during his election to the Rajya Sabha. Next hearing has been fixed for April 15.

Bhutto warrant

KARACHI: A Pakistani court today issued arrest warrants for formerpremier Benazir Bhutto and two ex-officials of the national airlines on corruption charges. The accountability bench of the Sindh High Court issued bailable warrants for Bhutto, former MD of Pakistan International Airlines and another ex-Govt official in a case referred by the chief accountability commissioner.

Russia premier

MOSCOW: President Boris Yeltsin today named 35-year old technocrat Sergei Vladilenovich Kiriyenko as Russia’s new Prime Minister and threatened to dissolve Parliament if it did not approve his nomination. Kiriyenko, former fuel and energy minister in the Viktor Chernomyrdin Cabinet was appointed acting premier on Monday after the stunning dismissal of the entire Russian Cabinet by Yeltsin.

Urea scam case

NEW DELHI: Trial in the Rs 133 crore urea scam case today came up for hearing before Special Judge V B Gupta after it was transferred to his court on the order of the Delhi High Court. The case was allotted to him by the High Court on a petition by twoexecutives of Turkish firm Karsan Ltd, who are among the nine accused in the case.
