SHARJAH, DEC 11: Skipper Sachin Tendulkar’s heroic 91 went in vain as England defeated India by seven runs with three balls to spare in the opening match of the Akai Singer Champions Trophy four-nation cricket tournament at the Sharjah Stadium here tonight.
Brief scores: England 250 all out in 49.5 overs beat India 243 all out in 49.3 overs.
Rabri elected
PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi was today declared elected to the State Legislative Council defeating her lone rival Savitri Devi of Janata Dal by 118 votes. Rabri polled 209 votes against her BJP-Samata-backed rival’s 91. The seat fell vacant following resignation of Ravindra Kumar Tanti of the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal. As Rabri Devi was not a member of either House on becoming CM, it was mandatory for her to become member within six months.

PATNA: Congress in Bihar is heading towards a split as ex-CM Jagannath Mishra decided to float a new party today. “We have decided in principle to break away from the Congress on December 24,” Mishra said after a meeting of the steering committee of his newly formed Bihar Congress Bachao Manch. Claiming that seven former MPs and sixty former MLAs had attended meeting, he said, “By supporting a govt which has ruined the economy and failed to check lawlessness, the Congress has made itself irrelevant in Bihar”.
Orissa JD crisis
NEW DELHI: Janata Dal’s Orissa unit today appeared to be on the verge of a split with the pro-BJP rebel faction all set to launch a new party in a day or two. Sources close to the rebels said the dissident leaders would return to Bhubaneshwar on Friday to chalk out their future course of action following rejection of their proposal, to form an anti-Congress front to fight the elections, by the high command.
