PANAJI December 8: A new train from Mumbai to Kochi via Goa will be started on the Konkan Railway from January 2 next year. Prime Minister I K Gujral will inaugurate the train, an official release said on Monday. Minister of State for Law and Justice Ramakant Khalap said the new train service would be a “real boon to the people of Goa”.
UP pay scales
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh on Monday approved the revised pay scales for its government employees at par with the Central government. The revised scales will be effective from January 1, 1996, an official release here said. A decision to this effect was taken at a Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh.
Karanth critical
MANIPAL: The condition of Jnanpeeth award winner Shivaram Karanth, who was admitted to the KMC hospital here on December 2 following cardiac problems, continues to be critical with “no signs of improvement”, medical sources said here on Monday. The 95-year old litterateur is also suffering from brain stroke and kidney failure.
Icy expedition
PANAJI: The 17th scientific expedition to Antarctica left here for the icy continent in `Polar Bird’, an ice-breaker. K R Shivam, Director, Research and Development Organisation, Pune, is leading the 52-member expedition.
Malta tragedy
NEW DELHI: Two more accused in the Malta boat tragedy case surrendered before a Delhi court on Monday. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Prem Kumar fixed Tuesday for the hearing of the bail application of accused Jaswinder Singh and Bulwinder Singh, against whom non-bailable warrants have been issued.
