Rahul Banerjee lived up to his billing as the top Indian archer as he finished 14th in the qualification round of 44th World Outdoor Archery Championships currently underway in Leipzig.
While Rahul finished higher up in the order with a score of 1330, his senior teammate Tarundeep Rai had a miserable outing, finishing 64th among 128 archers. The other Indian in fray, Somai Murmu finished 54th. Murmu had an individual score of 1292 while Rai shot 1280.
Ditto in the women’s section. While up-and-coming archer Chekrovolu Swuro finished in the 18th spot with an individual score of 1330 her more senior teammate Dola Banerjee finished poorly, securing the 50th spot. Even the inexperienced Bombayla Devi managed to finish higher up in the order than Banerjee. Devi shot a score of 1312 while Banerjee managed just 1294, according to information reaching here.
In the team event, India secured the 14th and 12th spot in the men’s and women’s sections, respectively.
In the individual elimination rounds on July 12 Rahul is up against Andranik Shahnazaryan of Armenia (ranked 115 with 1243 points) while Murmu takes on Thomas Aubert of France (75 and 1270) and Rai locks horns with Martin Bulir of the Czech Republic who finished 65th with a score of 1279.
On the women’s front, Swuro takes on Szilvia Molnar of Hungary who shot 1218 to bag the 111th spot. Devi is paired with 97th-ranked Magali Foulon of Spain (1248) and Banerjee is clubbed with 79th-ranked Russian Simona Bancila who shot 1268 points.
In the compound elimination rounds on Wednesday, all the three Indian women archers have got first round byes, while their male counterparts are up against tough Italian and American opponents. Jayantilal Nanaoma will take on 49th-ranked Daniele Bauro of Italy and Ch Lenin is up against 12th-ranked Wilde Reo of the US.
In the women’s second round, Jhanu Handsa, who finished 22nd in the qualifiers, takes on Dirma Miranda Dos Santos of Brazil while Bheigyabati Chanu is paired with Hiroko Taniguechi of Japan and Sumanlata Murmu is clubbed with Galdys Willems of Belgium.
