CALCUTTA, Oct 3: East Zone’s Sanjay Kumar Rai created a new National mark in the long jump event of boys’ under-20 on the first day of the ninth Inter-Zonal Junior Athletic Championships at the Salt Lake Stadium, here today. The 18-year-old Rai cleared 7.64 metres breaking his own mark of 7.53 which he had set in 1996.

However, Rai found another of his national records in under-18 age group being erased, when Praveen G Kumar of South Zone created a new record in the triple jump with 14.53 metres.

For the 16-year-old Praveen, this is his best effort yet. Another SAI youngster Sunil Kumar Azad, also of East Zone, equalled his National record of 2.05 metres in the high jump of under-20 for boys. Azad, however, was not too satisfied as he claims to have done much better than that in practice. The third National record of the day was created by S Geetha of South Zone in the 100 metres of under-16 for girls.
