BANGALORE, December 18: Indian Railways, represented by S Bhattacharya, A Mukherjee, A Das, R Roy and N P Kabiraj pulled the rug from under the feet of Formidables in the last session to win the Team of Four Duplicate event and annexed the Ruia Gold Trophy in the 39th National Bridge Championships in progress here.

Though 15 IMPs adrift at the end of the penultimate round, Railways repeated their semifinal feat to play another dream session and out point Formidables. They not only wiped out the deficit, but went on to win by 27 IMPs, the final session scoreline reading 46-4 IMPs.

The sequence of scoring was, nil on the first deal, three IMPs for Railways on the second, no score on the third and two more IMPs for Railways on the fourth before the big bang. The fifth board in this segment and the 53rd in the series gave Railways the first smell of recovery. Railways scored a little slam in 6S on which surprisingly the Formidables pair was only in 3NT making five. To add to this under bid, on the very next, a vulnerable board, they stopped short of a game, being in 3H while the Railway pair bid the game.

The finals of the Board-a-Match has 44 teams, who will vie for the Dhampur Sugar Trophy over the two days.
