BULAWAYO, NOV 22: A heavy downpour this morning that left the Queen’s Sports Club outfield water-logged resulted in the abandonment of the final day’s play of the first Test between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

The match was called off and declared a draw without a ball being bowled today, with Zimbabwe 136-3, six runs short of making Sri Lanka bat again. The downpour began half an hour before the scheduled first over was due to be bowled flooding parts of the ground.

Sri Lanka have every reason to feel unfortunate at the intervention of the weather as they had an outside chance of winning the match. Zimbabwe skipper Andrew Flower said today that he would have preferred to have saved the match without the help of the rain.
