With polls round the corner, Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh is serving up welfare policies. A meal of dal-bhaat at just Rs 5 is the government’s ‘‘humane face’’ he has to offer at 146 counters across the state. The scheme was part of the government’s 100-day agenda but with Lok Sabha polls being advanced, Singh is set to roll out the scheme by January 26.

The counters will be fully funded and manned by social organisations. At least two dozen such bodies have already sent their proposals. ‘‘I don’t know why I am repeatedly asked what is the financial liability in opening dal-bhaat kendras? Till we have organisations like Mahavir International, a voluntary body, why should I worry about running as many kendras as needed?’’ he said at a function.

‘‘The idea is not to feed the hungry or provide cooked meals at cheaper rates. I want to add a humane face to the government,’’ Singh said.
