Chennai, Jan 12: The new format and tight schedule might worry a few players but for Chetan Panduranga Baboor, nothing seems to bother him. Probably helped by the Swedish exposure, Chetan on Tuesday showed he is in a different league and did not give Arjun Dutta an iota of a channce in today’s semifinal. Chetan won 21-12, 21-12, 21-15 to bid for his fourth consecutive title.

Subramaniam Raman, who looked like packing off Arup Basak in a hurry, suddenly lost control of the match and allowed his PSCB teammate to bounce back. In the decider, Raman jumped into a 7-0 lead and kept on hopping to overcome fatigue and finally got through to the final of the Indian Oil-Servo 60th Senior National table tennis championships at the Multi-purpose stadium on Tuesday. Raman prevailed 21-18, 21-16, 11-21, 18-21, 21-16. It remains to be seen whether Raman can unseat Baboor from the throne on the morrow.

All-Bengal Women Final:

Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak made it sure that the women’s title will be Bengal’s, whenthey got the better of their opponents in the semifinals. Mouma Das, who reached the final at Thane two years ago, was in control against Arul Selvi, except for a brief aberration in the second game when she lost five points in a row, up 19-16. She finally won 21-7, 19-21, 21-17, 21-12.

A far from fully fit Poulomi Ghatak, due to a bout of fever ended Kasturi Chakraborty’s hopes of retaining the title. Kasturi had her chances in the first game which went to extra points but then Poulomi took over to script a 23-21, 21-12, 21-16 win.

Incidentally, in the recent Junior National girls final, Poulomi put it across Mouma Das to take the title. For the little Mouma, it will be a big chance to settle scores and importantly win her first senior title. All the same, a new champion will emerge on Wednesday.

The match of the evening was between Raman and Basak. Raman, fresh from his training stint, sported a new look. The improvement was all too eveident when he pocketed the first two games with nonchalant ease.Effectively using his serve and employing the third ball attack, Raman was on a song. But a little slackness on his part in the third game allowed Basak just the tonic he was looking for. A fired-up Basak quickly took the third game and opened up in the fourth to disturb the composure of Raman.

Raman breathed more easily, jumping to a 7-0 lead in the decider and ensured that the substantial lead stayed that way till the end. In what will be his sixth final, Raman said he was fatigued at the start of the second game. “I just kept on hopping to drive out the fatigue,” said a relieved Raman, a little disturbed at the heavy load he had to undergo on the day.

There is nothing suprising when players get fatigued because of the format which forces top players to take part in the league with mediocre players and added to that, the unimaginative scheduling of matches adds to players’ woes.

Raman is the only player to have beaten Baboor in recent times and an exciting final is in theoffing.
