In a bid to spread its network globally, Reliance Communications (RCom) today announced the acquisition of Uganda based Anupam Global Soft (U) Ltd. The acquired company holds licences to provide public infrastructure and telecom services in the African country. However, the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

RCom plans to invest upto $500 million to offer mobile, fixed line, internet, national and international long distance services, in addition to WiMax and Wifi services. The company has received Spectrum allocation and plans to launch its mobile services by the end of 2008.

“Uganda telecom market is at a stage where India was eight years back. Our expertise in managing integrated telecom networks and the understanding of diverse consumer segments makes us confident of achieving a significant position to add further value for our 2 million shareholders,” said Reliance Globalcom president Punit Garg.

The company plans to connect the African continent with the world by laying a submarine cable system through its arm Reliance FLAG and spend $1.5 bllion for a 1,15,000-km long IP-enabled optic network in Africa.
