An own-goal by Pepe gave Deportivo La Coruna a 1-0 win over Real Madrid, and another bottle-throwing incident involving Real Betis forced the suspension of their match with Athletic Bilbao.

The game was halted in the 72nd minute with Athletic leading 2-1 at Betis’ stadium. Athletic goalkeeper Armando Ribeiro was hit in the face by a bottle thrown in the 65th by a Betis fan who was detained by security guards. Betis said in a statement that the fan would be banned from all future sporting events. Madrid’s loss gives FC Barcelona a chance to reduce the gap in the title race to five points. Madrid lead with 62 points. Villarreal are third with 50.

Elsewhere, Luis Fabiano scored twice to lead Sevilla past Valencia 2-1 and improve their chances of returning to the European Champions League next season.

Sevilla moved into fourth with 45 points, one point better than Atletico Madrid and Racing Santander.
