LUCKNOW, APRIL 18: The vote by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MPs against the A B Vajpayee Government in Saturday's trust motion has given a handle to the detractors of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. Those against Kalyan in the party and non-BJP parties are blaming the BJP's Central leadership of offending BSP leader Mayawati on the issue of continuance of Kalyan Singh as Chief Minister. This, they say, led to Mayawati voting against the motion in Parliament.Kalyan's detractors have also blamed him for unnecessary lobbying for support among senior Central leaders at a time when the Vajpayee Government was itself in trouble. They said the issue should not have been taken up now, when each vote was vital for the Government's survival.According to party leaders, it was Uma Bharati who first came out in support of Kalyan Singh. Union Home Minister L K Advani ended chances of any negotiations with the BSP when he categorically said there was no question of Kalyan's removal in wake of growingresentment among party workers, they said. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has been camping in the Capital for the past four days to thwart any attempt to remove him in the light of a deal with Mayawati. He and the BSP leader do not see eye to eye ever since he opened up various inquiries against Mayawati for the activities under taken by her during her tenure as chief minister. Sources in the party said Mayawati had put forth only one condition for extending support to the Vajpayee government - Kalyan's removal as Chief Minister.``She did a volte face on the floor of the House when she became sure that the party leadership is not going to replace Kalyan,'' a disgruntled BJP leader said.Meanwhile, with collapse of the Vajpayee Government, Opposition party leaders and bureaucrats who are not liked by Kalyan have become active in the state, hoping that the state government would fall soon.
