MUMBAI, December 18: Students of ICL College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Navi Mumbai are in a quandary after the management put up a notice stating that donation money will be refunded only if they produce the receipts of the payment. However, a majority of the students have lost their receipts.
The Bombay High Court had recently ordered the college management to return the donation amount of over Rs 29 lakh collected from students during the academic year 1996-97. The college authorities maintained that the entire amount will be refunded by January 31 next year. However, some students said the money will be refunded only to the students who will produce receipts for the donation.
“Only about five per cent of the students have their receipts. The rest have paid and not bothered to keep any receipts. Does that mean that we will not get our money back,” asked a few affected students. They further said that many students are unwilling to claim the amount fearing harassment in future by the college authorities.
Reportedly, degree college students Rohit Saxena and Jyot Kumar were threatened in the campus recently for attempting to collect the names and signatures of those candidates who had paid donations last year. “We have submitted a complaint to the police and also met the Commissioner of Police regarding the threats in the campus,” said the two students.
The Student Action Committee of ICL College has also written a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai stating that the principal harassed some of the girl students and a history professor for participating in a strike against the irregularities in the college last year. Principal Dr S N Shetty has denied the charge. “We have not issued any threats and have not resorted to any intimidatory tactics,” he said.
The President of ICL Education Society, R S Jhunjhunwala, further stated that they shall repay the donation amount as per the high court directions. “Some sort of proof is required for the repayments. However, since we do have a register too, it will not be a problem to repay the amount individually,” he said.
