Moga: Government teachers in Punjab will organise a state-level rally at Chandigarh on July 22, in a bid to pressure the state government for early acceptance of their demands for reinduction of teachers who were relieved in wake of Punjab and Haryana High Court directions to this effect.This was decided at a rally organised here yesterday by about 3,000 teachers, including 1,800 teachers relieved by the state Education Department.

Jalandhar: The academic work on the campuses of 220 universities and 9,000 colleges will be disrupted on Tuesday as the teachers will proceed on mass casual leave. Thousands of teachers will join the march to Parliament starting from the UGC office. All the universities in the region, Punjab University, Punjabi University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjab Agricultural University, Kurukshetra University, Maharishi Dayanand University, HPU, Horticulture University, Solan, Hisar Agricultural University will join the march, a AIFUCTO spokesman said here.

Bathinda: PSEB Engineers’ Association Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant Lehra Mohabat in its general body meeting yesterday has decided to wear black badges from tomorrow, followed by daily protest rallies, resorting to work- to-rule and socially boycotting the board management during their visit to the plant to protest the unreasonable suspension of the Chief Engineer V. Sharma.The board authorities had placed Sharma under suspension following his inability to run the first unit of the thermal plan on full 210 MW capacity.

Ferozepur: Teachers of the local RSD College here have proceeded to Delhi to join national-level teachers strike and also to participate in teachers march on Tuesday. Prof Devinder Arora, Teachers Union spokesman said here that on August 4 teachers will observer a token strike and will resort to indefinite strike from August 11.

Mishap
Phagwara: Two scooterists were crushed to death after a tanker knocked them down near Jalowal Colony near Bhogpur yesterday. The tanker which was coming from Pathankot went out of control and rammed into the scooter coming from Jalandhar. Tanker driver Yashpal Singh fled from the spot. The police have registered a case.

Crime
Nahan: Poanta police arrested Darshan Singh, watchman of IPH office of XEN Poanta, for allegedly burning the official record to save a daily wager, Des Raj. Des Raj, who was facing departmental inquiry for tampering with records, is reportedly absconding.

Nahan: M.D. Sharma, additional sessions judge, Sirmaur, at Nahan sentenced Lal Singh for two years rigorous improsement and fined Rs 2,000. According to prosecution, when complainants, Raj Rani and Usha Rani, were going to school on January 20, 1996, the accused gave them a lift in his truck and instead of dropping them at school he took the truck to Bagan road and on the way drugged them and later raped them.

Nahan: Sirmaur police recovered a stolen Maruti car from Badwas in Una district. The car was stolen from Kamar village in Shillai thesil of Sirmaur district on June 7. No person has been arrested so far. SP Sirmaur said that three shops at Khala Kiar Bridge in Renuka were gutted, causing a loss of Rs five lakh.

Head priest dead
Patiala: Head priest of the local dera Mata Kaillan of Nath sect Atak Nath died here yesterday following a heart attack. According to a press release of the dera issued today, keeping in view the last wishes of the 47-year -old Mahant the dead body of the Mahant was immersed in the Ganges at Haridwar today. The release said that the taiya ceremony will be performed here tomorrow.

Inspection
Amritsar:Balbir Singh Chandi, Director Prosecution and Litigation – cum-Additional Secretary Legal Matters, Punjab today inspected the local prosecution agency.Chandi also held a meeting with local District Attorney Gurdev Singh and others members of the prosecution agency.He assured the members that more additional district attorneys will soon be appointed to meet the additional work pressure.
