
Deaths mourned
Amritsar: The teachers, employees and students of School of Punjabi Studies of the Guru Nanak Dev University have mourned the sad and sudden death of Amrit Singh Mann, former Reader of School of Punjabi Studies and former fellow of the university and eminent Punjabi scholar, Joga Singh, deputy director, Punjab School Education Board, in a condolence meeting held here today. A two-minute silence was also observed in the memory of the departed souls.
Advisory panel
Amritsar: Sukhwant Singh Bindra, Professor, Department of Political Science of Guru Nanak Dev University, has been nominated for three years on the advisory board of research committee on “Armed Forces and Society” affiliated to the International Political Science Association. He has also been invited to participate in the search committee’s triennial conference being held at the Ben Gurion Research Centre, Ben Gurion University, Sede Bokee, Israel.
Sangat darshan
Amritsar: Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has decided to hold Sangat Darshan’ in various towns of Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts from January 25 to February 25 to redress the grievances of consumers. Chief Engineer PSEB (Border Range) K.S. Gill, who will personally attend the sangat darshan programmes, in a release here today said electricity complaints regarding new connections, inflated bills and problems faced in execution of scheme of 30 units free power supply to Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes would be redressed on the spot. He said the sangat darshan would be held at Dera Baba Nanak on January 25, Attari (January 29), Harike (February 2), Sathiala (February 4), Dinanagar (February 9), Khadoor Sahib (February 11), Ajnala (February 16), Narot Jaimal Singh (February 18), Khemkaran (February 23), and Bandala (February 25).
CBSE merit certificate
Mansa: Three students — Jaskaran Goyal, Anchal Garg and Gagan Aggarwal of Class X of SDKL DAV Centenary Public School, Mansa, have been awarded certificate of merit by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Delhi, for their outstanding performance in secondary examination held last year. According to the letter of Deputy Secretary (Admn II), CBSE, written to the principal of the school, the students have been identified among 0.1 per cent of the successful candidates in each subjects merit-wise. Jaskaran Goyal has also been considered for the national scholarship and prize.
Sarbat da Bhala
Kharar: The All India Congress Committee will celebrate the Khalsa tercentenary year as Sarbat da Bhala’ year and various programmes to commemorate the Khalsa Panth will be organised by the Congress. These include the massive Shardha Yatra, blood donation camps, kirtan darbars, kavi darbars and dhadi darbars, said Bir Devinder Singh, General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and chief of Khalsa Tercentenary Celebrations Committee formed by the Congress, during a chat with ENS.
Statement decried
Nawanshahr: The district leadership of Indian Minorities and Dalit Front (IMDF), during a special meeting here today, voiced serious concern and deep anguish over the unwarranted and arbitrary statement of Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, acting president of SGPC, in which he has criticised SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal. Disclosing this to mediapersons, Gurmeet Singh, president of the district unit, said that the Bhaur’s statement was a breach of party discipline and amounted to causing aspersions on the party leadership. Gurmeet Singh said the meeting has urged Badal to dismiss Bhaur from the primary membership of the party without any delay.
