
Plea
Amritsar: Gurpartap Singh Tikka, president, Youth Akali Dal (Badal) and patron, Amritsar Autorickshaw Union has asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to write off the arrears of taxes and penalties on autorickshaws.In a memorandum submitted to Badal, Tikka demanded that penalty for non-payment of tax and late passing of three wheelers should not be more than Rs 10. He said Badal had assured them to consider their demands sympathetically and had even invited the union to Chandigarh for a detailed discussion.Tikka also said Ram Sharan Pal was no longer the president of Amritsar Autorickshaw Union, as he was removed from the union for not rendering an account of lakhs of rupees.

Nahan: Retired Government Teachers Association president Yog Raj Gupta and general secretary Daleep Singh in a joint statement have urged the state government to release the enhanced DA installment for retired employees, all other benefits at par with Punjab government retired employees and three advance increments to graduate physical education teachers which was lying pending for the last 10 years.They said that the retired employees be given the revised pension at the earliest on the basis of revised pay-scales after January 1996.

Nahan: Rajeshwar Goyal, SDM, Nahan, in a statement issued here today said the interview for part-time water carriers in primary schools would be conducted from February 3-5 in his office at Nahan. He said that interview for the Nahan and Surla blocks has been fixed for February 3, Nohradhar and Bakras blocks for February 4 and for Dadahu primary block has been fixed for February 5.The police department has fixed February 2 for the recruitment of jawans and the unemployed youth registered with the state employment exchange can appear with their registration cards.

Kapurthala: Punjab Governor B.K.N. Chhibber has called upon social and voluntary organisations to come forward to help tackle the enormous tasks of providing medical facilities to millions and ensure cent per cent literacy.Presiding over a function organised by Lions Club for the rehabilitation of widows and destitutes here today, he lauded the role being played by the Club. Chhibber asked the members of such clubs to adopt villages for providing education and health facilities.Earlier, addressing the function, Vijay Chopra, editor, Hind Samachar Group of Newspapers, urged Lions Club to adopt widows and grant a monthly pension of Rs 150 to each of them.
Pardon granted
Hisar: Haryana Governor has granted pardon on certain conditions, remitting the un-expired portion of life sentence of a murder convict, Siriyansh Kumar Jain, presently imprisoned at central jail here.According to an official order issued on January 25 this year in this regard, the Governor has granted conditional pardon to the convict in the exercise of powers conferred by Article 161 of the Constitution, read with Section 432 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.The order said that before his release, the prisoner shall furnish, to the satisfaction of the District Magistrate concerned, for the condition of keeping peace and good behaviour and surrendering when so desired by the Haryana Governor during the unexpired periods of his sentence.

Shimla: The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has threatened nation-wide agitation against the recent hike in Public Distribution System (PDS) items and urea.Terming the hike anti-poor and anti-workers, president of the state unit of INTUC Kanta Sood has asked the Central government to withdraw the hike immediately or face agitation.
