After shaking up the telecom market in India, the Reliance group is spreading overseas. Reliance Communication Inc (USA), owned by Reliance Group, has acquired the licence for setting up telecom network in the US and the UK, a move which will bring down the cost of international long distance (ISD) calls substantially.“Reliance Communications Inc (RCI) has obtained authorisation from the US to operate as a facility-based carrier for providing telecommunications services between USA and foreign countries including India,” Reliance Infocomm executive director Manoj Modi said. RCI has already established two Points of Presence (PoPs) in the USA at New York and Los Angles, he said, adding that in the UK too the company would be setting up these points shortly. These two countries account for a major portion of the traffic from India, Reliance officials said, adding that “from there we can distribute traffic to other neighbouring countries, like from UK to other European nations.”Asked what kind of benefit the ISD callers would be getting from this, the officials said this would bring down ISD cost substantially. By setting up these facilities in foreign countries, the company is making interconnection very simple for the carrier partners.
