MOGA, Jan 3: The Punjab government has decided to introduce religious education as compulsory subject in the schools from next academic year.
This was announced by Punjab Education Minister Tota Singh while inaugurating the veterinary dispensary at Nathuwala Jadid village in the district yesterday.
The minister said that the Education Department has formulated a new programme involving 30 lakh school children, under special drive both in the rural and urban areas against narcotics and sex determination tests killing female children.
He said that the state government was taking a number of measures to minimise the expenditure both of the IAS and IPS officers as austerity measures in the state. He urged employees not to agitate and also not to be misled for agitations as the state government had given Rs 900 crore relief to its employees last year.
On the occasion, Tota Singh presented a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to village panchayat for development works for achieving distinction by the village, in family welfare and child-mother health care programmes.
The minister also announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for village school, Rs 50,000 for boundary wall of veterinary hospital, Rs 25,000 for promotion of sports to village sports club.
Another Rs 25,000 were granted for boundary wall of village cremation ground.
