Amid mounting public pressure, the Uttaranchal police on Monday arrested three of the four policemen accused in the killing of Manisha Thakur of Roorkee, near Rishikesh, on November 15.

A local court remanded the three to judicial custody for 14 days. The fourth accused, Head Constable Jagdish Singh, has not yet been arrested.

The three policemen continued to be present at the Rishikesh police station following the killing and even gave their statements before senior police officials. However, as soon as the case was registered against them, they disappeared.

Even as senior police officials made statements about numerous raids being conducted throughout the state to nab the four policemen accused in the case, these policemen managed to approach the Nainital High Court to seek anticipatory bail.

The court, however, refused to grant them bail and ordered the state government to file counter affidavits in the case.

On Sunday, Sanjeev Chauhan, the husband of the deceased woman, along with his young daughter Bhumika, and sister Bharati—all eyewitnesses to the shooting—met Uttaranchal DGP Kanchan Chaudhary.

Sanjeev, Manisha, Bhumika and Bharati were travelling in a car that fateful night when the policemen, believing them to be smugglers, opened fire on them killing Manisha.
