The occasion is avowedly to mark the release of the second edition of DMK chief Karunanidhi’s Thokappia Poonga, an interpretation of the ancient Tamil grammar work Tholkappiam and aimed at making it accessible to the common man. Party cadres are busy putting up multicoloured wall-posters and hoardings for tomorrow’s event. Not because they have all suddenly become literary enthusiasts. The beaming face of Karunanidhi’s son Azhagiri, seen alongside his father’s everywhere, says it all — it is an all Azhagiri show, marking his rehabilitation and even coronation as the crown prince of the southern district units of the DMK. The organising committee headed by Anja nenjan (the fearless) Azhagiri has planned to create a record of sorts on the very first day of the book release. They plan to sell at least 5,000 copies though it is expensive at Rs 500 a copy.
