In Europe and the United Kingdom, they hardly knew what it was to clock a timing of less than 10 seconds in men’s 100 metres until Linford Christie came into the picture. Now, 11 years after he hung his boots, he’s back in the news again. This time only to wonder how in the world did Bolt clock 9.69 seconds in the marquee event this year — precisely 0.27 seconds lesser than the epic Christie himself had run in Barcelona.

“I’m quite impressed with (Usain) Bolt,” he said, at the sidelines of a promotional event. Christie is also completely supportive of the way

Bolt celebrated after leaving competitors way behind — an issue raised by IOC chief Jacques Rogge.

“I think what Usain did was very cool, and I would have done much worse. I don’t think Rogge has ever competed at any level, and even if he did, I’m sure he didn’t win anything of note. No wonder he (Rogge) doesn’t understand a champion’s sentiments,” he says.

Christie also admonished such attempts by administrators and authorities to make their voices heard through faulty accusations.
