MTV went pubbing on Wednesday night, in search of a new face. They kicked off their VJ-hunt at 10:30 at Copa Cabana. Packed to the hilt, wannabes were vying for a spot next to Rahul Khanna, Tarun Shahane and the beautiful Mona darling Shehnaz Treasurywalla. And amidst the hustle, bustle and struggle, the doors were flung open to make way for a yellow-coat-dark-glasses adorned VJ-hunter. Accompanied by two dancers it was hard to miss the resemblance to Jim Carey in The Mask. Parrying with a magnifying glass, he stooped low and wriggled his way through the throng, on the lookout for beautiful people with a talent for the blah.
Then Shehnaz and Rahul took over with their what-makes-a-VJ questions. But the background roar and music ensured that the answers were more for the benefit of the mikes than the crowd. The next stop was Ghetto where the dance had to be cancelled because there just wasn’t any place to shake. The next two stops, J49 and Razz Rhino, proved to be a gold mine with enough interest and breathing space. The hunt ended at 3:00 am and in all, 30 wannabe VJ’s were auditioned. From Mumbai, the hunt went to Delhi, Bangalore and Madras.
Foreign face
But the MTV Hunt is not the only thing Rahul Khanna is going to. It’s rumoured that he will be making his screen debut in a foreign film. Unlike brother Akshaye, filmi sources say, his looks are too sophisticated for Bollywood star-gazers.
Yo Wave!
Friday night at the pub Wave in Hotel Horizon, was the last lap of the Yo-Frooti tour. The tour had been to pubs all over town to promote their new tetra-pack. While the evening turned out to be a bit of a damp squib, the same cannot be said for the pub though. It is spacious, comfortable and the play of light-bulbs over the dance floor can beat the best dancer on it hands-down. Call it competition from heaven! And complimenting the effect, is a DJ who knows how to mix-and-match East with West. If you want to listen to a potpourri of Annie Lennox and Runa Laila, Wave is the place to be.
Heading out
MORE and more people are leaving the city for the greener and drier pastures of exotic foreign locales. Ekta Kapoor, for instance, is taking a well-deserved break in London from Mumbai though her serials are still going strong on the telly. And when she comes back, rumour has it that it will be a long time before she can take another break as she is expected to beinundated with work.
Others, such as model Lascelles Symons, have tried to combine work with pleasure. He seems to be trying his hand at everything at the moment. First, he began by designing womens wear and now he is trying his hand at designing some incredibly funky and outlandish menswear. But these plans are on hold while he tours the UK, modelling for an European company.
New addition<.B>
THE 1900s is not taking competition lying down. To combat the Three Flights Up threat it is now bringing the world inside its walls. The disco has acquired a video wall compromising of sixteen 29- inch TV monitors. Currently on a stage by the dance floor, this split screen will be there all of this week as well. For regulars, this means they can get their regular telly fix and still be out partying. A timely addition as the introduction coincided with Wimbledon. This video wall will be moving to other clubs in the near future and is the brainchild of Aditya Motwane. Chicago’s Radios heir apparent is an enterprising lad who also helped the sport of polo go commercial. Now, he is marketing this state-of-the-art video wall.
Close up
THAT’S not all that’s happening at the 1900s. To build customer loyalty they are breaking their tradition of monthly promos, and are hosting a second special nite just 10 days after the House party.
Tonight you can get a preview of the Femina Look Of The Year contestants. In fact, members and guests can get a chance to mingle with the contestants at length. And, as if a chance to look at the babes is not enough, the club has also waived entry fee for members and three guests. And yes, the elusive Sheetal Malhar (who is either sleeping or in the bathroom when you call her home) should be putting in a rare appearance. Ad by the bayIF there had been a fire at Jazz By The Bay this Saturday, the entire advertising world would have been devastated. Out in full force, the heads of every major ad agency had come together to celebrate Enterprises’ Mohammed and Madhu Khan’s wedding anniversary. Toasting the couple with champagne (what else) were Mike and Rekha Khanna, Rajiv Agarwal (of Nexus+Equity) and Jamini Ahluwalia. Also spotted were royal scion Pratap Gaekwad, model Namrata Barua and the usual smattering of Mumbai’s beautiful people. And seducing them with the lilting strains of jazz were the incomparable duo of Pam Crain and Louis Banks.
And finally…
Still going strong is Mumbai’s new restaurant El Mexicano. It continues to attract the city’s rich and famous. From the glamourous model Madhu Sapre to businessman and socialite Suresh Bhojwani, they all seem to love the place. But if you are going there to be seen and just want to sample the fare, check out The President at lunch time as it virtually empty in the afternoons.
