MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 27: Hundreds of Republican Party of India (Ramdas Athawale faction) activists today staged demonstrations before Bombay High Court and five other metropolitan courts demanding reservation for dalits in promotions and education, especially for super speciality medical courses.

The protests were against the Supreme Court ruling that candidates who secured jobs through the reserved quota were not entitled to seniority over general category employees. Copies of the court’s ruling were burnt.

Demonstrations were also held in front of metropolitan courts at Naigaon-Dadar, Vikhroli, Kurla, Bandra and Borivali. The police, however, maintained that there were no demonstrations in front of the HC. About 400 activists were arrested across the city. The arrest follows violation of ban by the police on assembly of people in the vicinity of courts till October 11. The RPI has planned another round of demonstrations on October 2 .
