The Congress today called ‘‘scandalous’’ RSS chief K.S. Sudershan’s statement blaming Mahatma Gandhi for the Partition of the country.

Party spokesperson Jaipal Reddy said it was the Sangh Parivar that played the ‘‘stooge’’ of British imperialists.

‘‘It is highly objectionable that the RSS chief was trying to denigrate the greatest contributions made by Mahatma Gandhi… While historians all over the world have blamed Jinnah for the Partition of India, the RSS is blaming Gandhiji,’’ he added.

Reddy alleged RSS ‘‘played the role of stooge for the British imperialists and never lent support to the freedom struggle and none of its leaders including K.B. Hedgewar, M.S. Golwarkar or Balasaheb Devras who courted arrest during the struggle’’.

‘‘It was, therefore, not proper for the RSS and those who have no contributions in the freedom struggle to downplay the contributions of Gandhiji,’’ he added.

Meanwhile, the Congress dismissed the recent reshuffle as a ‘‘meaningless’’ exercise saying the government seemed to treat the Ministry as a ‘‘transit lounge’’ where people come and go.
