The rumour of a hardcore criminal from Himachal being killed in an encounter in Bathinda sent the local police and the jail authorities in a tizzy today afternoon.

It is learnt that Ambrish Rana, involved in a number of criminal cases, was brought from Himachal Pradesh to Bathinda today, for a court hearing. While Rana attended the court hearing, a rumour spread that he was killed in an encounter by the police, while trying to escape from custody.

Sources claimed that even the top brass of Himachal Pradesh made inquiries to check the veracity of the rumour about the criminal.

When contacted, Bathinda Jail Superintendent Capt LS Jakhar said, “Rana is hale and hearty and in the jail.” Bathinda SSP Ashish Chaudhry said he too enquired about the incident, and found that it was not true.
