President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia possesses more than 70 million tons of solid nuclear waste, but no effective means to process them.

Addressing a State Council session today after launching the third unit at the Kalininskaya nuclear power plant, in the city of Udomlya (Tver Region), about 350 km north of Moscow, Putin said that the infrastructure for processing the waste was ‘‘extremely inadequately’’ developed.

Meanwhile, the head of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency Alexander Rumyantsev said that his ministry would develop a control board to fit the nuclear power station at Bushehr in Iran, tailored to Iranian requirements.
