The three-day SAARC summit which was scheduled to be held in Dhaka from January 9 has been postponed in view of the tsunami tragedy that struck three member countries — India, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury called Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran this evening, to inform him of PM Khaleda Zia’s decision to postpone the summit, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said. Official sources said that Sri Lanka, the worst-hit by the tidal waves, and Maldives had said it would be difficult to attend the summit. In Dhaka, a spokesman for the PM said fresh dates would be fixed soon.
