Taking a cue from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) at Safdarjung Hospital is also planning to implement the 27 per cent quota for OBCs in one go this year.
“We have enough space to increase our seats from 100 to 154, and we will be able to do it this year itself,” said a senior official at the college.
All the 12 medical colleges under the Union Health Ministry are scheduled to present their action plan for implementing the quota to the Health Minister at a meeting on Thursday. While some are planning to reserve the seats in one go, others say they will do it in a phased manner.
AIIMS authorities have already said that they are ready to increase the existing 50 MBBS seats to 77 this year. “We have money, faculty and space, so are set to do it this year,” said a senior official.
Meanwhile, Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) authorities are planning to implement the quota in a phased manner. The college has 130 MBBS seats at present. Authorities of PGI Chandigarh, who will also be present at Thursday’s meeting, are set to increase the existing 200 seats to 220 this year. “The rest will be done in a phased manner,” said a senior official.
