NEW DELHI, SEPT 12: Steel Authority of India (SAIL) today said it has achieved 80 per cent of Y2K compliance at plant level and other business systems, while a contingency plan has been drawn up to meet any unforeseen circumstances.

SAIL had rolled out a year 2000 readiness programme across all units and plants as early as the middle of 1998, official sources said adding that a corporate task force on Y2K headed by the executive director of corporate plan division was constituted.

"By the end of August 1999, SAIL had accomplished almost 80 per cent level of compliance and is very confident that by the end of October, it would reach close to total compliance in all its business systems and embedded systems", a SAIL spokesperson said.

The corporation has also drawn up contingency plans to meet any unforeseen circumstances arising after midnight of December 31, 1999. Making an organisation like SAIL "Year 2K ready" was a very challenging in view of the size and diversity of its operations, he said. It isnot only the business systems that have to be straightened out, but being a process industry, it has also to deal with a large number of embedded systems.
