NEW DELHI, JAN 2: Assembled personal computers (PCs) are back in favour after two years of slump. Sales of assembled PCs have reported a 46 per cent growth in the first half of the financial year 1998-99 over the sales recorded in the corresponding period last year.
In contrast, the total desktop market has recorded just about 31.5 per cent during the period under review.
The surge in demand assembled PCs came primarily from price conscious home, small office and small business segments. Over three-fourth of the business of assemblers came from these three segments. In value terms, the assembled PCs reported 44.7 per cent growth during first half of 1998-99, while total desktops reported just about 15.4 per cent growth. A survey by IDC (India) over the two quarters among assemblers and resellers of assembled PCs found that a total of 3.58 lakh desktops worth Rs 1,518.6 crore were sold during period April and September 1998-99.
