Through the right over the Nationalist Congress Party’s name, symbol and flag will go to whoever has the higher numbers, NCP leader from the North-East P.A. Sangma today went to the EC to bid for the party’s insignia.

While Sangma himself met the EC legal cell official A.K. Mazumdar and claimed he represents the ‘‘original’’ NCP, the other NCP strongman, Sharad Pawar, filed a caveat to stall Sangma’s move.

‘‘The group that commands majority support has a right over the party name, symbol and flag. In NCP’s case, it won’t be possible to take a count at the lowest level. We will consider the organisational strength and the strength of the legislative party of both groups,’’ EC sources said.

One claim that Sangma has made against Pawar is the issue of ‘‘person of foreign origin cannot be the country’s PM’’ was the basis for the party’s formation. By sticking to that stand, he has proved that his is the ‘‘original NCP’’. Sources said EC does not take note of such ‘‘emotional’’ claims.
