Chief editor of Financial Express Sanjaya Baru is the new media advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Straddling journalism and academics, Dr Baru, 50, joined the media 14 years ago.

Baru began as an academic and took his bow in journalism in 1990 when he joined the editorial page of the Times of India and became the associate editor of Economic Times.

Taking a break from journalism, Baru reverted to academics when he joined the Research and Information System for the Non-Aligned and other Developing countries (RIS) and became professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) only to join the Financial Express as editor first and chief editor later.

Baru, who has served as consultant to UNDP and was member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB), has also been a member of the CII-Aspen Institute group on India-US relations for the last three years.

A PhD in economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Baru is also Watumull Fellow, East West Centre Hawaii.
