MUMBAI, DECEMBER 20: Mumbai coach Subhash Bandiwdekar terms him the `breakthrough bowler’ of the team. “He has given the openings whenever needed,” said the former Mumbai wicket-keeper when Sachin Sawant had ended another dangerous alliance from the Maharashtra camp at the Wankhede Stadium this morning.

The diminutive medium-pacer broke through the ranks of the Maharashtra batting in superb fashion to script a success story for Mumbai in the Hindustan Inks West Zone under-22 cricket tournament that concluded today.

Sawant’s seven wickets for 56 runs describe his single-handed demolition the opposition which was threatening to overhaul the Mumbai first innings score of 330. Kaushik Aphale and Vedant Patwardhan, who had raised Maharashtra hopes on Sunday, extended their gritty association, when the side resumed the day at 137-3.

Aphale, went on to notch 102 (213b, 261m, 14×4) but his efforts went in vain. Sawant put an end to the most fruitful stand of the innings, worth 110 runs, by claiming Patwardhan (42: 95b, 141m, 6×4).

Thereafter, it was a Sawant show all the way as Maharashtra lost the next five wickets for 70 runs. Sawant, who picked six wickets today, had an impressive last spell which read 4.2-1-17-4.

Bowled out 80 runs short of Mumbai’s total, the rest of the day’s proceedings of the summit clash was just of academic interest. Once again, left-handed Pushkaraj Jadhav (46: 54b, 95m, 8×4) led the run-charge as Mumbai made 104-6, before the teams called of play with eight overs into the mandatory count. Mumbai, were thus richer by Rs 50,000 while Maharashtra had to be content with Rs 25,000.

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Raj Singh Dungarpur, who gave way the prizes, lauded the revival of the tournament after a 14-year hiatus and hoped that it would form the stepping stone to big time cricket.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has plans to include South Zone too in the tournament as it is the only other zone which conducts a similar event. The idea was mooted by Dungarpur and ex-Indian skipper Ajit Wadekar today. “We plan to have a West Zone winners and South Zone winners duel to begin with and slowly add up the other zones,” said Prof Ratnakar Shetty, joint secretary, MCA.
