LONDON, NOV 18: England stumbled into the European 2000 Championship despite a 1-0 loss to Scotland yesterday, with tiny Slovenia, Turkey and Denmark rounding out the 16-team field for next summer’s tournament.
England, going into the match with a 2-0 first-leg lead, had what coach Kevin Keegan called a “poor performance.” Don Hutchison’s first-half goal put the favourites under pressure for the whole match before thousands of shocked Englishmen at Wembley Stadium.
Slovenia gained its first spot in a major international tournament, drawing 1-1 in Ukraine to reach the final after winning 2-1 in the home leg. Turkey secured its place with a 0-0 home draw in Bursa after a 1-1 score on Saturday in Dublin, picking up the deciding away goal. Denmark, the ’92 European champions, hammered Israel 3-0 after winning 5-0 on Saturday.
The England-Scotland match, the oldest series in international soccer, was ringed by intense security and delayed 15 minutes in starting. England now leads the series 45-41 with 24draws dating from 1872.
It was Scotland’s first win at Wembley since 1981.“We didn’t play well. We just couldn’t get going at all,” Keegan said. The consolation for the Scots was beating their old enemy for the first time since 1986, at Wembley, and scoring against the English for the first time in six meetings.
“I have never had less than 100 per cent effort from these players and we have never lost two in a row in 39 matches and we weren’t going to lose two in a row against England,” said a proud Scotland manager, Craig Brown.Keegan’s star-studded team made it to the finals on the strength of its 2-0 win at Hampden Park in the first leg on Saturday with both goals from Paul Scholes.
In Central London around Trafalgar Square, about 200 English fans and 300 Scots threw bottles and other objects at each other with almost as many police forming a cordon between them. Several fans were arrested but no injuries were immediately reported in the pre-game violence.
At Kiev, Slovenia, a country of twomillion that gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, made history with a 1-1 draw with Ukraine. With the Ukrainians leading 1-0 a score that would have qualified them Slovenia equalised in the 77th when Miran Pavlin scored after Zlatko Zahovic’s shot rebounded off the Ukraine defence.
Ukraine took a 1-0 lead in the 68th when star forward Andriy Shevchenko was pulled down in the area and Serhiy Rebrov converted the penalty on a slippery, snow-covered field.
At Bursa, Turkey, Turkey held Ireland to a 0-0 draw. As it turns out, the deciding goal was Saturday’s penalty in the 83rd minute by Tayfur Havutcu. The Turks had the balance of play yesterday and qualified for their second straight Euro championship. The Irish played without injured striker Niall Quinn and goalkeeper Alan Kelly with 19-year-old striker Robbie Keane also missing with a suspension.
At Copenhagen, Denmark, the ’92 champions, got goals from Ebbe Sand, Brian Steen Nielsen and Jon Dahl Tomasson to make their fifth Euro finals. Israelfailed to land a spot in its first major international soccer tournament. In a related development, Israel’s coach Shlomo Scharf said he would investigate a report in The Maariv daily that some of his players partied all night with prostitutes hours before his team was crushed 5-0 last weekend.
“I check the room of every player at 11 or 11.30 p.m. and make sure they have gone to sleep…. I bade each one good night and there was nobody else in the room,” Scharf told Israel Radio.
In Spain, Kily Gonzalez and Mauricio Pochettino scored second-half goals to lead Argentina to a 2-0 win over Spain in an exhibition match.
