ISLAMABAD, March 22: A campaign is about to start in Pakistan’s largest province to root out thousands of "ghost" primary schools believed to have siphoned off tens of millions of dollars in government funds.

More than 1,400 Army teams will start inspecting around 56,000 government-funded primary schools in Punjab, home to 60 percent of Pakistan’s 140 million people, officials said. The "corruption mafia" in education has embezzled billions of rupees over the years for schools that existed only on paper and claimed funds to pay fake teachers, an statement said.
