Jung, representing Himachal Pradesh, aggregated 685 points to emerge ahead of Haryana’s Deepak Sharma (673.7) and Punjab’s Amanpreet Singh Jhaam 672.8). In the men’s double trap event, Mohammed Ashab of Chhattisgarh took the gold with a total of 157 points while Services picked up the other two medals through Himanshu (153) and Dil Bahadur Thapa (146).

Lifting gold shared

Services, Manipur and hosts Assam shared the three weightlifting gold medals up for grabs. After two days of competiion, Services lead the medal count with two gold medals, followed by Manipur, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh with one apiece. In men’s 69 kg, Services’ G Vadivelu bore 120 kg in snatch and 158 kg in clean and jerk for a total lift of 278 kg that fetched him the gold. In women’s 53 kg class, celebrated lifter Sanamacha Chanu of Manipur bagged the gold. The fight for the women’s 58 kg category saw the hosts gleaning the gold through Renu Bala Chanu Yumnam, who lifted 94 kg in snatch and 114 kg in clean and jerk for a total haul of 208 kg.

Punjab in hockey semis

Punjab blanked Tamil Nadu 4-0 to ensure a berth in the men’s hockey semifinals at the expense of Delhi. Delhi had earlier raised hopes of a berth in the last four with a 4-1 victory over hosts Assam but Punjab’s win later in the day resulted in the team from the national capital being eliminated.

Maharashtra strike gold

Maharashtra overcame the challenge of Himachal Pradesh 30-27 to strike gold in women’s Kabaddi. In a pulsating final played at the Kanaklata Indoor stadium Himachal Pradesh displayed tremendous fighting prowess but failed to measure up to the fast Maharashtra players in a match that was witnessed by a packed crowd.

Manipur in semis

Holders Manipur will meet last year’s runners up Bengal while Orissa lock horns with Goa in women’s fooball semifinals. In the last group matches Bengal played a goalless draw with against Goa, enabling both the teams to reach the last four on points basis.

Punjab shine in boxing

Punjab, UP and Haryana were among the states who won their quarterfinal matches in boxing. Balkar Singh of Punjab defeated Meher Singh of SSCB 39-24 to at least ensure a bronze medal in 91 kg category. In 91 kg, Krishan of Haryana beat Joginder of Goa 25-24, Harinder Singh of Manipur beat Dijai Bahari of Meghalaya, M Singh of Assam defeated H Singh of SSCB.
