PUNE, Dec 6: Thirty two-year-old Nitin Laxman Gadekar who allegedly PRESENTED himself as the personal secretary of Shiv Sena MLA Deepak Paigude and duped several people to the tune of thousands of rupees has been arrested by the crime branch police.
Gadekar, a resident of N/19 Ramyanagri Bibewadi, posed as Paigude’s personal secretary, sometimes his younger brother and his cousin. He promised people to get their work done, appoint them to official committees and allot them jobs. In return, Gadekar took large amounts from them, the police said.
Paigude had lodged a complaint with the police in early August saying that he had received complaints about the misuse of his name and office.
Gadekar, who has studied up to standard X, met people in distress and gave them various assurances. Incidentally, he carried a fake cellular phone to impress people. Most of the times he pretended he was speaking to Paigude. Sometimes, he posed as Paigude’s younger brother stating his name as Ajay.
While complaints about the impersonator were being received by the police, Gadekar’s arrest came only when a professor from Waghere College at Saswad passed on some information to the police. Gadekar had assured the professor, Bhanudas alias Balasaheb Maruti Katke, that he would get him a job confirmation at the college provided he paid him Rs 10,000. Katke paid him Rs 7000 and made an enquiry at Paigude’s office. When he learnt that Gadekar was not associated with Paigude, Katke contacted the police when he was about to hand over the remaining amount of Rs 3000 to Gadekar. Gadekar has been remanded in police custody until December 12.
PI Vishwas Chowghule and PSI Shreerang Langhe of the vigilance branch are investigating the case.
Meanwhile, the police have asked citizens who were victims to Gadekar’s false promises to contact the vigilance branch.
