Security of SC to be revamped: CJI

In view of heightened threat perception in and around its premises, a high security system will be put in place in the Supreme Court soon as per government’s plans to tighten vigil at major installations of public importance.

Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan said the measures have been taken for going ahead with the complete security system and people have to be ready to face some inconvenience.

“You will find some inconvenience but be ready for it,” the CJI, who was interacting with the legal reporters, said.

The security of the apex court was being tightened as the Ministry of Home has suggested that full proof security was needed in view of the increasing threat perception in and around its premises.

He said, ‘high security card system’ will one of the mandatory arrangements in the scheme for entry into the apex court premises.

Asked about the time-frame for introducing such measures, the CJI said, “it will take sometime”.

The technical bid for installing the system has been opened but financial bid was yet to come in place.

He said for enhancing the security system there was a discussion with the Bar Association and on the present arrangement there were some objections.

He also dispelled the notion that the Supreme Court was not within the purview of Right to Information Act.

“No the apex court is not out of the purview of RTI Act. We have been providing all information to the information seekers and there have been hundreds of application,” he said when asked about it.
