Kanchi Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal said today that he will not interfere in the Kashi and Mathura issue and that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) should be magnanimous in donating the disputed land to the Hindus. Talking to mediapersons here today, he said: ‘‘The Mutt will not proceed further on the Ayodhya issue,’’ but hastened to add, ‘‘Our doors are always open, if they (AIMPLB) want to discuss further. They are always welcome, we will do our best to help sort out the issue.’’ Singhal in Ayodhya to meet sants LUCKNOW: VHP working president Ashok Singhal held a closed-door meeting with senior Parishad functionaries in Lucknow on Monday before heading for Ayodhya where he is expected to meet sants. Singhal’s visit assumes importance as senior Muslim leader Syed Shahabuddin visited Faizabad and Ayodhya on Sunday and held talks with Muslim leaders there. Singhal, who called on ailing Ram Janmbhoomi Nyas chief Mahant Ramchandra Das Paramhans, said the religious head told him that there would be no compromise on the temple site and it should be built at the same place. He said the VHP had convened a meeting of the Sri Ram Janmbhoomi Andolan Mandir Nirman Uchaidhikar Samiti in New Delhi on July 11. (ENS) Refusing to agree that the talks failed, he said: ‘‘We moved one step further. Last year, they discussed our first proposal and it failed when a person obtained an interim court stay. This time the Kashi and Mathura issue, which we pointed in our letter, has created some doubts.’’ In his letter to the AIMPLB, the Shankaracharya had said that it’s a historical fact that Babur constructed a building at the site to commemorate his victory. He went on to say that Kashi, Mathura and Ayodhya, all three, are considered holy by the Hindus. If the ‘‘disputed sites’’ are given over to the Hindus, sometime in the future, if not today, that would go a long way towards generating goodwill among the Hindus for the Muslims, he said. He wondered when the Wakf Board donates properties for various charitable institutions, why doesn’t it do so in the case of the disputed site in Ayodhya too. He stressed that Muslim leaders should not ‘‘be adamant but must adopt a give-and-take policy with a view to maintaining communal harmony in the country.’’ ‘‘The Muslims can instill confidence in the Hindus by donating the land.”
