The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) today said that no second or alternative proposal to resolve the Ayodhya dispute has come to them from Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati.

‘‘There is no such alternative or second proposal from the Shankaracharya. We are still waiting for something in written form as was promised to the Board president,’’ AIMPLB spokesperson Syeed Kashim Rasool Ilyas said, denying media reports that a second proposal is on its way.

Describing reports of the Vajpayee Government-sponsored negotiations as ‘‘largely media hype’’, Ilyas said the Kanchi seer had indeed met AIMPLB president Maulana Rabe Hasni Nadvi in Lucknow, ‘‘but under different circumstances and certainly not to discuss Ayodhya’’.

However, a source close to Nadvi admitted that though the Shankaracharya visited the Board president at his residence in Lucknow on the evening of June 7 on the pretext of inquiring about his health, the Ayodhya issue had cropped up at the meeting.

‘‘Though Nadvisaab had made it quite clear to the Shankaracharya that he could come only if it was a personal visit and promised not to raise the Ayodhya issue, the issue certainly came up during the meeting. But Nadvi made it clear that the Board can only discuss the proposal if it comes in a written form,’’ the source said. ‘‘Nadvi has not yet got the written document, which was to reach him in five-six days’ time. Today is the 11th day but nothing has come to us,’’ Ilyas said.
