SEPTEMBER 28: The chaff has been weeded out from the grain. Haryana, Chandigarh, Karnataka and Orissa have progressed to the last four stage of the Bank of Baroda 31st Junior Women’s National hockey championship. Haryana are defending champions while Chandigarh won bronze in the last edition at Jalandhar in 1997. They take on Karnataka and Orissa respectively in the semis tomorrow.

The competition so far has progressed on predictable lines, with fancied teams ruling the roost. Old-timers lament the poor quality of play dished out this far and many of them pin the blame on the draw. For instance, Punjab were sent back after losing just one pool game.

The semis promises more, with three of the four teams standing a good chance of winning the title.
