Mumbai, April 24: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal today expressed confidence that the Mumbai police will very soon track down the assailants responsible for the recent killings of two Shiv Sena shakha pramukhs.
After a hectic meeting with senior police officers including the director general of police Subhash Malhotra and city police commissioner Ronnie Mendonca, Bhujbal, who also holds the home portfolio, said he had a telephonic conversation with senior Sena leader and former Minister of State for Home Gajanan Kirtikar about the unfortunate incidents.
The Deputy Chief Minister assured that security will be provided to the Sena leaders and shakha pramukhs who are under threat and have received threatening calls. Describing the killings of the two Sena shakha pramukhs as unfortunate, he said the police has been directed to nab the accused behind the dastardly acts soon.
Bhujbal said he has also directed senior police officers to find out as to why the conviction rate in Maharashtra has gone down to four per cent from the earlier 18 to 25 per cent. Though he said that it was better than the national average of around one per cent, however, he added that this was not a consolation.
He attributed the decline in conviction rate for the lack of coordination among the police — which prepared the chargesheet and the public prosecutors, who pleaded the causes in courts. He said that there was a need for a study to find out the details regarding the decline in conviction rate and pointed out that now the prosecution directly comes under the directorate of prosecution.
Bhujbal also expressed concern over the tendency of police officers serving in the rural areas who want to be transferred to the urban places and those serving in urban places do not want to go back and serve in rural areas.
The Deputy Chief Minister further said the government is in a process of acquiring sophisticated systems including communication sets and weaponry. He also said that more and more flying squads will be deployed througout the city to avert such incidents in future.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray addressed senior party leaders and shakha pramukhs at the Sena Bhavan at Dadar here in the wake of killings of the two Sena shakha pramukhs. A party spokesperson confirmed about the meeting and said that it was still in progress. The Sena ranks and files had expressed anger over the recent killings of shakha pramukhs.
