Joining the Babri debate fuelled by MP Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister and senior Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay today said a solution could have been worked out to ensure Babri Masjid was not demolished and the issue was not used by Hindutva forces to catapult themselves into mainstream politics.

Speaking to The Indian Express here, Sahay, who claimed he was involved in finding a solution to the problem in 1992, said even Congress leaders were unhappy with former prime minister Narasimha Rao’s handling of the situation. “He was just playing into the hands of the RSS. The BJP and VHP took advantage of his indecision,” he said.

Sahay claimed that the VHP, BJP and RSS had always created hurdles in the way of negotiations while the Muslim parties, including the Ulemas and leaders of the Babri Masjid Action Committee, believed the dispute must be solved peacefully.

“During the Shilanyas movement in September 1989, the VHP had entered into an agreement with the Uttar Pradesh Government to abide by the court’s directions. Later, the spirit of this agreement was violated when the VHP called for Karseva in October 1990. Despite this, the Muslims entered into negotiations to consider whether Babar had destroyed a Ram temple to build this mosque,” said Sahay.
